If there are cushions to hand, use them to protect your head.

Stay away from chests of drawers, sideboards, bookshelves or hanging things which might fall.

Secure an emergency exit.

When you feel the shock, open a window or door to secure an emergency exit.

If you do not open a window, the shock of the earthquake may distort the house and the window-frame so that it will not open later.
